Alfa Romeo Tango Aboard Battleship IOWA Museum
October 4, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Event Navigation
The new art gallery Alfa Romeo Tango, which lives within Battleship IOWA, is pleased to present its grand opening exhibition, featuring new and old sculptures by Los Angeles-based artist Ben Jackel for the San Pedro Arts Community but open to the general public. This premiere exhibition is the first time contemporary art has ever been shown onboard a historic warship in Los Angeles. The centerpiece of this show is a newly completed stoneware sculpture of the doomed World War II heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis. The ship that delivered the atomic bomb Little Boy to the Pacific island of Tinian and then was sunk by a Japanese submarine is most famous for the suffering and loss of her crew, hundreds of whom were eaten alive by sharks. The sinking of the Indianapolis led to the greatest loss of life from a vessel at sea in US Navy history.
