Join Battleship IOWA’s crew and volunteers as we honor and remember the 30th Anniversary of IOWA’s 47.

On April 19th, 1989, the USS IOWA was approximately 300 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico when, at 0953 local time, the number two 16″ gun turret exploded. This explosion in the center gun room killed 47 of the turret’s crewmen and severely damaged the gun turret, itself.

Each year, the Pacific Battleship Center at the LA Waterfront hosts a memorial ceremony for the crewmen lost that day. Our ceremony will commence on the Bow at 0930 and conclude at approximately 1045. Light refreshments will be served on the fantail following the ceremony until Noon (1200).
