Dear IOWA and Surface Navy Family,
The Surface Navy is the backbone of America’s Navy and the most capable surface force in the world. Since October 13, 1775, sailors of the Surface Navy have deployed around the globe.
Battleships evolved over time and were constructed to be stable and steady, and to inspire confidence. They sailed boldly wherever they went, made a statement simply by arriving, and never shirked a fight.
In spite of 2020 continuing to be a fight, like the IOWA herself, our armor is thick. We’ve taken some heavy punches, yet we’ve remained dreadnought-steady.
If a silver lining can be found in this pandemic, it’s that we’re more determined than ever to keep our charge – this phenomenal marvel of engineering – relevant, well-maintained, and accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.
The coronavirus forced us to move quickly to recalculate our course. Plans we intended to roll out in the future suddenly became imperative lifelines to sustain us in the present. We revamped our education program, added layers to our veterans offerings, and accelerated the development of a virtual tour.
These changes are the result of the hard work and dedication of our crew and the contributions of supporters like you. We are grateful for all you have done to keep us stable and steady through these uncharted waters.

Take a virtual tour
Our new virtual tour launched this week and it is fairly fabulous. CIO David Canfield leads our team from his background in tech companies as well as his passion for the ship in which he served, and it shows in every frame of this tour. He and his team have created a path on which each view is like standing on IOWA’s decks in person.
There are icons to click for further information on various spots, places to interact with content, even hidden “Easter eggs” to find – and the team isn’t remotely finished creating content. They’re crawling into as many areas of the ship as they can to allow you to go “virtually” anywhere.
