Fleet Admiral Nimitz USN 5 Star Flag
Object/Artifact
One US Navy Fleet Admiral Flag, size 32 1/2 inches in length and 22 inches high. Wool fabric. Blue field with five white stars sewed in a circle pattern. Flag designates the presence of a Fleet Admiral on board a ship. The rank of Fleet Admiral was established by Congress during the World War 2 era. FADM Chester Nimitz was the last Naval Officer that held this rank. There were only 3 others that were awarded this rank; William D. Leahy, Ernest J. King, and William F. Halsey Jr.
This flag was donated to the Pacific Battleship Center by the son of a battleship Iowa veteran / corpsman that was given this flag as a thank you. It was flown for FADM Nimitz while he was on board Iowa to give a speech, at Iowa's second commissioning in San Francisco, August 25, 1951.
