Becton USS Iowa Arrival Plaque
Object/Artifact
Formed aluminum sheet with letters cut from brass sheet arranged and riveted to the sheet in an arc, spelling "U S S Iowa". Displayed when welcoming aboard Captain Frederick J. Becton, Commanding Officer of USS Iowa from Dec 12,1956 until she returned to Norfolk for inactivation at the end of her second commissioning on September 28, 1957.
NOTE: Captain Becton served in battleships USS Texas (BB-35) and USS Arkansas (BB-33) He was CO of destroyer USS Laffey (DD-459) at Leyte Gulf, Normandy and Okinawa. He was awarded the Navy Cross and four Silver Stars for gallantry, heroism and distinguished service in various campaigns during WW II. He went on to become a Rear Admiral.
