Joe Sienkiewicz, the chief of NOAA’s Ocean Applications Branch, has quietly helped us behind the scenes to keep track of swells and storm surge that could affect Battleship IOWA as she sits tied to the dock in one of the world’s busiest harbors. Now he joins the podcast to discuss how though it may seem like the ship is safely and permanently in port, weather can still play a significant role in her existence.

From a fascinating analysis of historical data about 1944’s Typhoon Cobra to a break down of more recent events like Hurricane Marie in 2014, Joe’s perspective always makes your brain explode (in a good way), then reshape itself a little smarter than it was before you started talking to him.

As ever, if you have comments, questions, feedback, or want to suggest an episode topic, shoot us an email at podcast@labattleship.com.
