Who: Battleship IOWA’s 81st Birthday Special Event Honoring Jeff Lamberti
What: The inaugural USS IOWA Lamberti Service Award will be presented to Jeff Lamberti for his leadership in saving the USS IOWA and promoting the ideals of service, preservation of history, and the love of Iowa for future generations
When: February 22, 2024. Remarks begin at 1:00pm. Cake available until 3:00pm.
Where: Iowa State Capitol 1st Floor Rotunda.
Details: Program will include remarks from Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, Ambassador Terry Branstad, State Senator Michael Bousselot, State Representative Adam Zabner, State Representative Heather Hora, Battleship IOWA CEO Jonathan Williams.
USS IOWA has a long and fascinating history. She was built as the lead vessel of the newest class of battleships, designed during the 1930s as the world was rapidly moving toward war. Commissioned in 1943, USS IOWA was used in both the Atlantic and the Pacific theaters during World War II. After many years of service, USS IOWA was decommissioned for the final time in 1990. In 2012, she became a US Navy museum ship, the only naval museum on the West Coast to feature a capital ship that saw action in
World War II.
In 2007, Jeff Lamberti spearheaded efforts to save the USS IOWA. His leadership helped galvanize public and private donors as well as elected officials to secure $3.5 million in appropriations from the state of Iowa. In addition to state funding, Mr. Lamberti personally committed a significant amount of funding and support.
The USS IOWA continues this legacy of service as it stands as the #4 attraction in Los Angeles, annually providing direct services to over 7,500 veterans and educating hundreds of thousands of people about the ship’s continuing role in protecting freedom of the seas.
