Veterans Day: Mission to Heal
“My vision here today is to at least reach out to one vet who is suffering,” said Iraq war veteran Tom Woods during a speech he gave while standing in the shadow of the battleship Iowa in San Pedro on Saturday afternoon. Scanning the crowd, Woods adds, “Somewhere out here is a man who needs help, standing in this very parking lot.”
Veterans Appreciation Festival- Tours For Veterans
Gayle Anderson was live in San Pedro with a preview of Saturday’s Veterans Appreciation Festival to show appreciation for all that this nation’s veterans have done for their country. This free festival is for the whole family and will include free USS IOWA tours for veterans and active-duty military personnel (with ID), live music, a resource fair, kids’ activities, and food trucks!
Battleship Iowa open during government shutdown; military gets free admission
The Battleship Iowa will remain open during the federal government shutdown and will give active military and veterans free tours.
The Pacific Battleship Center, which runs the site, said it would remain open for the duration of the shutdown since it is a nonprofit independent organization.

A rare photograph has surfaced apparently showing an elevator added to the battleship Iowa, one of a handful of adaptations made to the vessel for wheelchair-user President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II.
USS Iowa Honors Service Members With Memorial Day Celebration
The crew of the Battleship USS Iowa is hosting their first Memorial Day celebration Monday since arriving in Los Angeles.
The event, which is to honor the men and women who have served and continue to serve the United States, is taking place at the LA Waterfront at 250 South Harbor Blvd. in San Pedro.
