Explore Naval Communications: Onboard and Beyond

October 17 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

A group of children gathers around an adult at Summer Camp, who is demonstrating how to use a large signal lamp outdoors near a parking lot, turning the activity into an exciting STEM Adventure.

Join us for an engaging exploration of how naval ships communicated with one another and with shore bases before and after the advent of radio, and especially when operating beyond the horizon. As warships evolved from small wooden sailing vessels into powerful steel battleships, effective communication became increasingly essential to navigation, coordination, and combat operations.

The Communications Tour traces the evolution of naval communications, from traditional visual signaling to advanced radio systems, while also highlighting the ship’s internal communication network. Along the way, you’ll visit key spaces throughout the battleship and discover how sailors relayed information between critical interior and exterior stations, enabling the crew to operate the ship safely, efficiently, and as a unified team.
