Field Trip: American HIstory
Learn History Where It Happened.Field Trip: American History
Don't just learn history. Walk through it.
The American History field trip uses the Battleship IOWA itself to help students understand the people, events, technology, leadership, and service that shaped America's maritime history.
Five Key Ideas
1. History Becomes Real When You Can Stand In It
Students don't simply look at photographs or read about events. They walk through the decks and passageways of an actual battleship and experience the scale and environment in which sailors lived, worked, and served.
2. Put the People Back Into History
The ship becomes the setting for stories about sailors, leadership, teamwork, service, sacrifice, innovation, and responsibility. The emphasis isn't just on what the ship did, but on the people who made it work.
3. Explore Innovation, Leadership, and Teamwork
Battleship IOWA allows history to naturally connect with technology, engineering, geography, communications, logistics, skilled trades, leadership, and civic understanding. Students begin to see history as the intersection of people, decisions, technology, and events rather than as isolated dates.
4. A Door Into Something Bigger
Maritime Pathways are introduced here. A student who comes aboard because of an interest in World War II might leave interested in engineering, leadership, navigation, technology, military service, or maritime careers. The field trip becomes a Discover moment that can lead to deeper exploration.
5. Turn Your Field Trip Into an Overnight Adventure
Schools can extend the experience into a two-day outdoor education program by staying overnight aboard Battleship IOWA and adding programs with AltaSea, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Los Angeles Maritime Institute, and other LA Waterfront education partners. This creates a broader experience connecting American history with ocean science, sailing, marine life, teamwork, maritime careers, and today's working waterfront. Students don't simply visit the LA Waterfront—they experience it.
