How Does a Battleship Float? Exploring the Science of Buoyancy

How can a massive battleship made of thousands of tons of steel float on water?

The answer is buoyancy—one of the fundamental principles of science, engineering, and naval architecture.

In this Battleship USS IOWA Weekly STEM Challenge, students explore the science behind why some objects float while others sink and discover how the principles of buoyancy help enormous ships like the Battleship USS IOWA remain afloat.

What Is Buoyancy?

Buoyancy is the upward force that a fluid, such as water, exerts on an object placed in it. Whether an object floats or sinks depends on the relationship between its weight, density, shape, and the amount of water it displaces.

This creates an interesting question for young scientists: If steel sinks, why doesn’t a steel battleship sink?

A solid piece of steel is denser than water and will normally sink. A ship, however, isn’t a solid block of steel. Its hull encloses a tremendous amount of air and is designed to displace a large volume of water. The combination of the ship’s shape, volume, weight, and displacement allows the buoyant force of the water to support it.

That’s why understanding buoyancy is so important to shipbuilding, naval architecture, maritime engineering, and life at sea.

Turn a Battleship Into a STEM Classroom
