Inside the Battleship IOWA Oil and Water Laboratory: How Sailors Monitored a Battleship’s Engineering Systems

How did sailors aboard the Battleship IOWA monitor the oil and water needed to operate one of the U.S. Navy’s most powerful battleships?

In this behind-the-scenes tour, Battleship IOWA crew member Don takes viewers inside the ship’s Oil and Water Laboratory, located on the third deck just off Broadway—the longest passageway aboard the ship.

The laboratory played an important role in monitoring the condition of the ship’s engineering systems. Sailors routinely collected oil and water samples from machinery and systems throughout the engineering spaces and brought them to the laboratory for testing.

What Was the Oil and Water Laboratory on Battleship IOWA?

Operating a battleship required much more than simply fueling its engines.

Battleship IOWA’s engineering plant depended on interconnected mechanical systems operating under demanding conditions. Oil and water samples were monitored regularly to help sailors understand what was happening inside those systems and identify potential problems.

Routine testing gave the engineering crew valuable information about the condition of equipment and the fluids essential to its operation.

It is an example of an important principle that remains relevant in engineering today: monitor the health of a system so problems can be identified before they become failures.

Where Did the Samples Come From?

The tour doesn’t stop at the laboratory.

Viewers travel deeper into Battleship IOWA’s engineering spaces to see the Fire Rooms and Engine Rooms and learn where samples were collected.

These spaces were at the heart of the battleship’s propulsion plant. Sailors working below decks operated and monitored the machinery necessary to move the enormous ship around the world.

Following the samples from the engineering spaces back to the laboratory helps illustrate how different departments, sailors, and systems aboard a battleship worked together.

Battleship IOWA is often remembered for her massive 16-inch guns, armor, speed, and imposing appearance. But keeping a battleship operational required thousands of sailors performing highly specialized jobs—many of them deep inside the ship and far from public view.
