2018: Two Million Visitors — and a Much Broader Mission
Battleship IOWA reached its two-millionth visitor in 2018, but the larger story was what the organization did with that reach: deeper education, veterans reintegration, new exhibitions, major energy upgrades, and continued development of the National Museum of the Surface Navy.
2017: Five Years of Battleship IOWA — and the Start of a National Museum Vision
Battleship IOWA’s fifth anniversary was both a celebration and a turning point. Strong attendance, thousands of students, tens of thousands of volunteer hours, an expanding LA Fleet Week, and early work with the Navy gave Pacific Battleship Center the confidence to pursue a national role.
2016: Education, Preservation, and the First LA Fleet Week
Battleship IOWA’s 2016 story brought together three missions that would shape the organization for years: educating young people, preserving the ship at battleship scale, and reconnecting Los Angeles with today’s sea services through the first LA Fleet Week.
2015: When Battleship IOWA’s History Became Personal
In 2015, Battleship IOWA increasingly used veterans’ voices, commemorations, cultural programs, broadcasting, and community partnerships to turn a massive warship into a human story.
2014: How Battleship IOWA Became Part of San Pedro’s Identity
Two years after opening, Battleship IOWA was no longer simply a new attraction. Tourism recognition, local economic impact, civic events, and a growing body of human stories were making the museum an anchor of the LA Waterfront.
2013: Battleship IOWA’s First Full Year as a Museum
The excitement of opening gave way to the harder work of operating. In 2013, Battleship IOWA earned national recognition, strengthened volunteer preservation, expanded public programs, and began proving that the rescue of the ship could become a sustainable museum mission.

A rare photograph has surfaced apparently showing an elevator added to the battleship Iowa, one of a handful of adaptations made to the vessel for wheelchair-user President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II.
2012: The Year Battleship IOWA Came Home to Los Angeles
After more than a decade of advocacy, fundraising, technical planning, and volunteer work, USS IOWA arrived at the Port of Los Angeles and opened to the public. The real achievement of 2012 was not simply moving a battleship; it was converting a preservation campaign into a functioning public institution.
