Operation Crush COVID Week 5: History
Before we jump into this week's topic, a quick note: we've hit a milestone. Today marks the start of Operation Crush COVID's Week 5. That means we're almost halfway through this campaign! As of the writing of this email, we had raised a little over $11,000. That's a remarkable amount and we're incredibly grateful for all you've done to get us this far. We still need your help, though, because we're a long way from our goal of $50,000. These campaigns work best when they're shared. Join the...
Update for 08/23/2020
IOWA Family: I begin this week’s message with thoughts going out towards the firefighters that are fighting the devastating wildfires throughout the State of California. We are truly blessed to have proud Americans willing to put their lives on the line every day to ensure our life and property is protected. The weather continues to be warm and the humidity on the high side. As you can imagine, with our efforts to preserve critical funds, we're not running air conditioning, so it is warm...
Operation Crush COVID Week 4: Education
When students come aboard Battleship IOWA, they enter a different world. Many of them experience both a ship and the ocean for the first time. Most discover real world applications for STEAM* concepts they'd never imagined. From our Day of Discovery program and its close cousin STEAM at SEA to our popular Camp Battleship overnight experience, we offer something for everyone! Battleship IOWA Museum's commitment to the youth of our community doesn't end where our boarding ramp touches the pier....
Update for 08/16/2020
IOWA Family: My sincere appreciation to our entire crew for remembering Jerry Bayless today with a brief service and flag raising. It is moments like this which remind us how precious life is and how grateful we are to come together as Americans to preserve the iconic Battleship IOWA for future generations. This past week, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII hostilities on August 14, 1945. This is a special date in history and we are appreciative of the Spirit of 45...
So Good, We Had To Bring You More
When we published our blog about volunteers on Wednesday, we held back a bit. Volunteer Coordinator Sue Schmidt has been with the ship since IOWA was liberated from the "ghost fleet" and spruced up in Richmond, before moving to her final home in LA. The perspective Sue gave us was so good, we merely teased it in that email. Here's the rest. BB61: How did you get involved with the ship and what impact has it had on your life? Sue Schmidt: Jonathan sometimes says that I was the first person...
Operation Crush COVID Week 3: One Ship, One Crew
Come aboard Battleship IOWA and you're likely to hear that phrase. It's our credo, the core of our culture. We say it, we live it. What does it mean? It means we don't care if you're volunteer or paid staff, a tour guide or a member of the ops team - whatever your role, we're family and we're all in this wonderful endeavor that is Battleship IOWA Museum together. We have one another's backs, we step up to support each other and the ship, and we get the job done. It's a fairly remarkable...
08/09/2020 Update
IOWA Family: We are approaching the end of the 2020 summer season. Usually during this time of year, we are in full swing of planning LA Fleet Week in front of the ship. This year’s Fleet Week has been postponed, but the team of partners is working on a virtual Fleet Week over Labor Day Weekend. September 2nd will be the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII and we will host a virtual program to recognize this important date. Stay tuned for more information. Last week an article came out in the...
Meet USS IOWA WWII Veteran Pete Bigler III
One of the most amazing things about being around Battleship IOWA is the stories you hear that you never expect. We opened a message in our Facebook inbox and discovered an absolute gem. Meet Machinist First Class Peter Alford Bigler III (1922-1975). He served aboard USS Iowa from 1943-1945 and from what his granddaughter told us, we wish we could've hung out with this character. He once got thrown in the brig for shooting a cockroach off the fantail. He'd hoard potatoes from the galley,...
Operation Crush COVID Week 2: Our Veterans
You've heard about our Veterans pillar, right? Well step aboard Battleship IOWA and you won't just find an imposing, storied ship with beautiful lines. You'll find a thriving community of veterans. We primarily serve veterans in Los Angeles County/SoCal, but with the advent of COVID-19, our veterans outreach has climbed. Our ability to provide the connection to peers and a community family, by phone and virtually, has helped ease the distress many of our veterans currently feel. Members of...
Update for August 2nd, 2020
IOWA Family: I hope your family and friends are doing well. I am certain that members of our family are affected both financially and personally during this pandemic. There is no doubt that our citizens and businesses need critical support to help all of us through these unprecedented times. We are closely watching the Washington negotiations to see how those may affect our organization. Your continued support is greatly appreciated and without it, we would not be able to remain viable and...
