The Type 99 was produced at nine arsenals both inside and outside Japan between 1939 and 1945. This example appears to be a "long" version, which was produced in a limited run of 38,000 only at Nagoya Arsenal and Toyo Kogyo between summer 1940 and spring 1941. The Type 99 will accept a Type 30 bayonet. It has an effective range of 717 yards with the iron sight, and a maximum range of 3700 yards. The gun uses a 5 round internal box magazine. The intact chrysanthemum marking is unusual, as most were defaced by surrendering Japanese troops to preserve the honor of the Emperor.
