Hull Preservation 2021 Campaign Week 9

You Asked. We're Answering! Throughout this campaign we've shown you examples of what's going on with Battleship IOWA's hull and why the need to address the challenges now is so pressing. We talked about the wind and waterline, cathodic protection, and cofferdams. You wondered why we don't just dry dock the ship. COO & Chief Engineer Mike Getscher responded to those questions from inside one of our cofferdams. Click the photo below for his interesting and informative answers. [embedyt]...

CEO Update May 17, 2021

Family: I am not going to start this message with attendance updates or the like, as frankly very little has changed since last week. Thank you for continuing to support and donate to the Hull Preservation campaign, as it will help us determine how much work can be done in 2021. Stay tuned for this week’s Hull Preservation update on Friday for current status. We have seen a noticeable increase in activity aboard IOWA, as restrictions are loosened, crew returns, and projects are funded. A few...

A Good Sea Story

No joke – there we were in the main channel of the busiest port in North America... That’s how all the best sea stories start, right? “No joke – there we were...” Maybe the language is a bit saltier, but the idea is the same. Battleship IOWA added another anecdote to the annals of her sea “lore” yesterday. It goes a little something like this: Problem: We need to transfer our work barge from the forward end of the ship to aft. IOWA is “starboard side to” – which means her starboard (right)...

Hull Preservation 2021 Campaign Week 8

Exciting News: ANOTHER $5,000 Match! Last week we announced a $5,500 match opportunity - $5,000 from an anonymous Richmond crew member and $500 from "Volunteer Crew Member BZ1." We're thrilled to share that you got us there! We've won another match. We're constantly blown away by the generosity of our supporters and the devotion this ship inspires. This week another donor stepped in this week to offer another $5,000 match! Jose Remon crewed aboard Battleship IOWA when he was younger. He still...

CEO Update May 10, 2021

Family: Happy Mother’s Day! Yesterday we celebrated all mothers for their influence on society and for always being there. Los Angeles entered the final tier of reopening (yellow tier) this past week, due to the continued decrease in cases and positivity rate. Our visitation continues to range between 50% and 60% of 2019 numbers. We are hopeful that the summer will be strong with a rebound in tourism and travel. All three of our program pillars (education, veterans, and community) are picking...

Hull Preservation 2021 Campaign Week 7

$5,000 Match Won For Hull Preservation! Last week we announced that we had met the $10,000 match and were halfway to the $5,000 match. You stepped up (again) and helped us win the second match. Thank you! We now have two new match sponsors and another $5,500 to match before the end of May. We know with your help we can win this one too to keep our magnificent ship afloat! Since launching the Hull Preservation Campaign 7 weeks ago we've raised $45,000. We still have a ways to go before meeting...

CEO Update May 3, 2021

Family: Los Angeles County is expected to reach the least-restrictive "yellow tier" of the state’s reopening blueprint this coming Thursday. This level should further relax the protocol when it comes to occupancy, events, and overnights. As mentioned last week, both events and overnights have recently reopened in compliance with public health guidance and can be booked with Catherine at groupsales@labattleship.com. Although restrictions have been relaxed, tourism still remains at its lowest...

Hull Preservation 2021 Campaign Week 6

April Is National Volunteer Month A ship is only as good as her crew and Battleship IOWA has an outstanding one! When the pandemic forced us to drastically cut our staff and operations, the extraordinary volunteers who are the heart and soul of our crew bridged the gap and they accomplished a lot! Volunteer Coordinator Sue Schmidt joins us this week to give our volunteers some well-deserved recognition and highlight some of our re-opening efforts with an extraordinary crew.  ...

CEO Update April 26, 2021

Family: We continue to experience attendance rebound on the weekends, with this past Sunday being the first to surpass pre-pandemic numbers. The weekdays remain weak as a result as a result of lower visitor attendance, but ironically drawing a higher number of local visitors than we generally experience. COO Mike Getscher continues to track local county orders, which have recently given us a green light for events with the caveat that they adhere to public health protocol. Following health...
