A modern naval vessel is a floating network of engineering, communications, sensors, weapons, computers, logistics and people. Protecting maritime operations, therefore, requires far more than a single career.
Maritime defense and security includes uniformed service, civilian government work and private-sector careers supporting ships, ports, technology and national security.
What kinds of careers are included?
The field can include mechanical, electrical, systems, software, and nuclear engineers; cybersecurity professionals; analysts; logisticians; technicians; shipbuilders; program managers; communications specialists and many other roles.
Some people serve in the Navy or Coast Guard. Others work as civilian federal employees, at shipyards, in laboratories, or for defense contractors supporting maritime programs.
What does a systems engineer do?
Complex defense systems rarely succeed because one component works well. Systems engineers focus on how hardware, software, people, and requirements fit together. On a ship, that can mean understanding how sensors, communications, power, combat systems and platforms interact.
This career rewards people who can move between technical detail and the larger mission.
Where does cybersecurity fit?
Ships, ports and logistics networks rely increasingly on digital systems. Cybersecurity professionals help protect networks and information from disruption or unauthorized access.
BLS reports strong demand for information security analysts across the broader economy. Maritime cybersecurity is a specialized application of those skills, often requiring knowledge of industrial control systems, communications, or operational technology in addition to general cybersecurity.
Do you have to join the military?
No. Military service is one path, but the Department of Defense and other federal agencies employ large civilian workforces, and private companies design, build, and support maritime systems.
Students should compare the obligations and benefits of uniformed service, civilian federal employment, and private-sector work. They can support similar missions while having very different careers and lifestyles.
What about security clearances?
Some defense jobs require eligibility for a security clearance because the work involves classified information. The government grants a clearance after an investigation; it is not a certificate that a student can purchase or earn in advance.
Many defense careers do not require access to classified information, and requirements vary by position.
How does this connect to Battleship IOWA?

Education and scholarship pathways
Engineering and computer-science careers usually require college degrees, while technical trades and certain operations roles may use different training routes. Students interested in defense STEM should compare programs in engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, mathematics, and data.
The Department of Defense SMART Scholarship is one example of a scholarship-for-service pathway for eligible STEM students. It supports approved disciplines, including computer science, electrical engineering, naval architecture, nuclear engineering, oceanography, and others, with a civilian DoD service commitment after graduation.
What can you do now?
Build strong math, science, and computer skills. Try robotics, electronics, coding and cybersecurity competitions. Learn how complex systems work instead of focusing only on individual pieces of equipment. Explore both military and civilian career options using official sources.
