A Visit From Congress

Last Saturday, Congresswoman Nanette D. Barragán, who represents California’s 44th Congressional District, came to the IOWA to join fellow USC alumni and current students for USC’s Day Of Service. The group assisted IOWA’s IT team in the removal of e-waste – the result of IT’s work to upgrade our systems to support our transition to the National Museum of the Surface Navy.

During her visit Congresswoman Barragán visited areas of the ship she had never seen. She was impressed and expressed her excitement both about our current mission and for her role in championing our designation as the National Museum of the Surface Navy in Congress.

Only Three Weeks Left Till LA Fleet Week

Are you ready? Just three weeks till the Navy rolls into town! LA Fleet Week is a multi-day celebration of our nation’s sea services, held on the LA Waterfront at the Port of Los Angeles over the extended Labor Day Weekend – Sept. 3-6, 2021.

Past events have included active duty ship tours, military displays and equipment demonstrations, live entertainment, aircraft flyovers, STEM Expo for kids of all ages, the annual Conquer the Bridge Labor Day 5.3-mile walk/run over the Vincent Thomas Bridge, sports tournaments, and the Galley Wars culinary cook-off competition between Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard teams.

Concerned about Covid? So are Fleet Week’s organizers. This year’s event has been restructured so that around ninety-five percent (95%) of offerings are outdoors. Public safety is priority one!

Lots of fun for the entire family. And best of all, entrance is FREE to the general public!  LA Fleet Week 2021!
