Veterans Day Recap

Veterans Day is always special at Battleship IOWA. This year’s celebration had particular charm.

Organized by Chris Ehling, military and veterans affairs manager for Veterans West, the day featured several elements:

  • A bell ringing ceremony
  • A flag retirement
  • Food and activities on the pier

The flag retirement drew the American Legion, Battleship IOWA’s contingent of Sea Scouts, and local Boy and Girl Scout troops, but that’s not all.

Wonderfully, in attendance were not one, not two, but FOUR World War II veterans (photo above left to right): 98-year-old Pulvio “Chips” Ciapanelli, 101 year-old Dale Freeburg, 101 year-old Leroy Forehand, and soon-to-be-100-year-old Lloyd Glick (saluting).

If that wasn’t enough, we also hosted our inaugural Steel Beach Cigar Social – an evening of food, cigars, and fun to raise money for our veterans programs.

Weren’t able to join us? There’s still a great way to celebrate veterans.

Where In The World Is Team IOWA?

Curiosity is one of our driving forces. It’s what helps us innovate and push the envelope on what’s possible for this ship and organization.

To that end our team is attending the IAAPA – the Global Association for the Attractions Industry – expo to find new and interesting ideas that might be incorporated into the National Museum of the Surface Navy.

We’re committed to keeping up to date with current and future trends in order to create one-of-a-kind experiences, increase access to programs and services, and deepen our community impact.

Navy: Stewards of the Sea

Speaking of increasing our experiences… have you checked out our NEW EXHIBIT?

We collaborated with the US Navy to create this interactive journey through a little-known aspect of the Navy’s commitment to freedom of the seas: its environmental initiatives.

Look through binoculars to spot wildlife from the bridge of a ship, find whales off the coast of California, and more.

Check it out aboard Battleship IOWA now!
