Plenty To Be Thankful For

November 28, 2024

Dear Friends,

As we enter the holiday season on Thanksgiving, I find myself reflecting deeply on the journey that has brought us to this moment. It has been a path shaped by purpose, resilience, and the transformative power of connection—a journey that would not have been possible without all of you.

This past month, I had the opportunity to share the story of USS IOWA with the Timken Veterans Resource Group, and in doing so, I was reminded of the countless moments that have defined not only this organization but my life.

Among those moments are the lessons learned from two extraordinary people: Greg Bishop and Bruce DD MacRae.

Greg was a photographer whose smile lit up the ship. He forged bonds with fellow crew members, navigating life’s challenges with the support of this incredible community.

We lost Greg on October 21st, and his passing has left a deep void. However, his memory lives on through the incredible photographs he captured aboard USS IOWA, which you can view at his Flickr page.

If you feel inspired, I encourage you to share your favorite Greg Bishop photo on social media in his memory, celebrating his talent and the light he brought to our community.

His story serves as a reminder of how something as simple as a shared purpose can illuminate the darkest days. In a world where 1 in 4 people report feeling lonely, Greg’s story underscores the importance of belonging and the profound impact we can have on one another.

Bruce, a dear friend and board member, faced a life-altering heart attack in 2015. That moment reshaped my own path, driving me to prioritize my health and commit to becoming the best version of myself—not only for me but for the people who count on me. His resilience and friendship continue to inspire me every day.

These experiences remind me of my grandfather’s transformation aboard his ship in 2000, when revisiting the USS MISSOURI gave him a renewed sense of purpose and sixteen more vibrant years of life. It was this spark—this understanding of how a ship and its community can heal and inspire—that became the cornerstone of what we do aboard USS IOWA. Our mission is not just to preserve a piece of history but to create camaraderie that changes lives are changed and forges connections.

I am reminded of the words of Pericles: “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”

Battleship IOWA is far more than a historic artifact; she is a living testament to the power of community, purpose, and shared legacy. Each of you has contributed to this woven fabric, leaving an enduring impact on those who walk her decks and find inspiration in her story.

As I reflect on all of this, I am profoundly thankful for the friends who have come into my life because of this ship. I am equally grateful for my family, whose steadfast support has been my anchor through the challenges of this journey—even as it has meant seeing me less than 100 days per year for over 13 years. Their sacrifice and belief in our mission have given me the strength to persevere.

To all of you—our board members, crew, donors, and supporters—I am deeply grateful for your trust, your dedication, and your vision. Together, we are building something far greater than ourselves: a legacy of purpose, connection, and service that will endure for generations.

May this season be filled with reflection, gratitude, and the joy of knowing that our collective efforts make a difference. Thank you for being part of this remarkable journey and happy Thanksgiving.

With heartfelt appreciation,
