US Navy: Stewards of the Seas

Defending Freedom, Protecting the Environment

Every ocean needs a steward.

The same ships that defend our freedom also help protect the ocean they sail on. Stewards of the Sea is an award-winning interactive exhibit aboard Battleship IOWA, built in partnership with the U.S. Navy's Fleet Forces Command to show how sailors safeguard marine life while keeping the seas free.

Meet Stewie, the Navy's environmental mascot, and discover the tools real sailors use every day — listen through hydrophone technology, learn to identify whales by sight and sound, and step behind "Big Eyes" binoculars to stand watch as a Navy lookout protecting both ship and sea.

A favorite among students studying environmental science, the exhibit reveals a side of the Navy's mission that rarely makes the spotlight.
