Last Week On Battleship IOWA
There’s a saying around here: never a dull day on Battleship IOWA, and it’s true. Last week did nothing to disprove the assertion. We had:
- A visit from our neighbors at Firehouse 112, who practiced rescue drills over the side of the ship
- A retirement ceremony
- The Army Navy game (we won’t discuss this year’s outcome)
- Several school groups
- And we were closed for three days to accommodate a film shoot with a major network TV show
The film shoot resulted in some spectacular views. We were asked to raise the guns on Turret I. The right gun has an issue and doesn’t move, but the others went up without a fuss.
The left gun’s breech is open inside the gun house and it was amazing to see it all the way down in the gun pit. And sunset over the turret was stunning.
Moral of the story: you miss a day, you miss a lot. Come join our crew, have fun with us, and make a difference.

Community

Hull Preservation
Battleship IOWA has approximately 1,800 feet of hull exposed to the naturally corrosive reaction at the wind and water line. Without treatment, the damage will become irreversible and the future of the ship and organization will be in jeopardy.
We need your help today to ensure future generations can marvel at and connect with this wonder of engineering.

Scuttlebutt Podcast | Extra: Justice Eileen Moore on Vietnam Veterans
Judge Eileen Moore served as a combat nurse in Vietnam in the Army Nurse Corp, where she was Lieutenant Eileen Moore. Following Vietnam she went to college, law school, practiced law for ten years, and ultimately was appointed as a judge to the superior court. She currently serves as Justice Moore on the California Court of Appeals.
Justice Moore does a great deal of work with veterans as they come through the court system and says her goal is to see that today’s service members are not treated in the same despicable manner as were those who served in Vietnam.
She was the keynote speaker at our Veterans Day celebration this year and moved us with a poignant speech about Vietnam veterans that included unforgettable stories we had to share.
This week’s podcast brings you her speech in its entirety.
